1-PS4-1. Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate. Students will develop an understanding that sound is made from vibrating materials by creating a shaker that makes noise. They will also explore sound generated with a kazoo, string, and rubber band. 1-PS4-2. Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that objects can be seen only when illuminated. 1-PS4-3. Plan and conduct an investigation to determine the effect of placing objects made with different materials in the path of a beam of light. Students will develop an understanding of what happens when you place an object into the pathway of a beam of light by turning on a flashlight and placing various shapes in front of the light to create different shadows. Students will test other materials they have around the house and begin to develop an understanding that objects can only be seen when illuminated by trying to see in a dark room. Students will develop an understanding that light and sound can be used to solve the problem of communicating over a distance. Students design and create different signs that are used to communicate a message over a distance and explore creating cup phones. 1-LS1-1. Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs. Students develop an understanding that seeds are made up of different parts through an interactive video lesson. Students dissect bean seeds and use their knowledge to design protective gear for a bicyclist that mimics part of the seed and helps protect the biker.
